Expanding a Trauma Informed Integrated Clinical Pathway for Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Young People across North East London

PROJECT STATUS: Completed
/
START DATE AND DURATION: September 2023 - January 2025
Summary

Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children (UASC) in the UK are a vulnerable population with complex social, mental and physical health needs. UASC are taken into the care of a local authority should receive an initial health assessment (IHA) within 28 days. A recent survey of IHAs across England showed significant variation in scope and quality of care. In response to these challenges, an ‘integrated pathway’ for UASC was developed in Camden. This model involves a multi-disciplinary and trauma-informed approach and prioritises three key areas for the UASC IHA: physical, sexual, and emotional health.

IMPACTS

With support from Barts Charity Grants, we adapted the integrated pathway for Newham and are expanding across North East London. We will undertake an evaluation, providing comprehensive data on the feasibility, acceptability, and the impact of the pathway. The service evaluation will inform cost-benefit analysis, help refine the integrated pathway, and guide further service development or scale-up.
