A feasibility RCT of early vitrectomy and intravitreal antibiotics for post-operative exogenous endophthalmitis (EVIAN)

PROJECT STATUS: Ongoing
/
START DATE AND DURATION: November 2021 - March 2025
Summary

Endophthalmitis is a rare but blinding bacterial eye infection that causes rapid loss of vision and that can complicate any invasive eye procedure. 50% of patients need surgery to remove the infected vitreous.

We are seeking to assess the feasibility of doing a trial of the benefit of performing surgery promptly on endophthalmitis in the reality of current NHS environments. Participants will be randomly allocated to have vitrectomy performed in accordance with standard care or at an earlier stage.

Provided feasibility is shown, study outcomes will enable development of a full clinical trial that will aim to improve evidence-based guidelines, reduce the socioeconomic burden and NHS management costs.
